Sounds a little scary, doesn’t it? I think it’s the word Programming – it has overtones of mind control, brainwashing, and having your thoughts dictated by aliens. I blame all those science fiction films.
It’s nothing like that at all.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) was created in the early 1970s by Richard Bandler, a computer scientist and Gestalt therapist, and Dr John Grinder, a linguist and therapist. It’s said by many to contain the most accessible, positive and useful aspects of modern psychology, and so can be helpful in virtually every aspect of personal and inter-personal relations. NLP has many beneficial uses for self-development, and for businesses and organizations.
NLP consists of a set of powerful techniques for rapid and effective behavioural modification, and an operational philosophy to guide their use. It is based on four operational principles, which are:-
1. Know what outcome you want to achieve.
2. Have sufficient sensory acuity (acuity means clear understanding) to know if you are moving towards or away from your outcome.
3. Have sufficient flexibility of behaviour so that you can vary your behaviour until you get your outcome.
4. Take action now.
Or if all that sounds too formal, my less formal explanation would be that if you can get all the various parts of your body to operate in a certain way by influencing them with your mind (which you do everyday as a matter of routine), you can influence your mind, and therefore your attitude, to a certain extent, by modifying how you use your body and behaviour in certain ways. In one way, the end result can be likened to the end result of Life Coaching – it’s goal-oriented, and they’re the goals you decide on.
My job, in using NLP to help you achieve your goals, is to clarify your situation in a particularly structured way so that you can see what variation of behaviour you need to arrive at your goal, and enable you to take action to make that variation.
It sounds a bit more complicated than it really is in practice, and it can have very rapid results indeed. It could easily be of enormous benefit to you.
